Zeptepi - Universality
[Probe One, 2007]
Genre/Pop, Genre/Indie
Brian Molko meets Steve Irwin meets Midnight Oil, take that how you will but it really doesn’t matter how you swallow it, as it will always result in the same thing: Zeptepi. That’s right, the boys are back with their second LP Universality and they are stronger than ever.

Universality is a solid Aussie rock album, vaguely reminiscent of the 80’s every now and again, the album can’t be anything but honest and intense. Phil Dean’s vocal work brings the songs to life in a way no one else could even dream of, his voice packed full of passion, he cuts through all thoughts forcing Zeptepi to be the only thing on your mind. The album seems to jump back and forth between rocking hard and mellowing out and back again, it’s a little confusing and somewhat hard to keep up with as Universality chops and changes, inadvertently affecting your frame of mind as it does.

The opening track on Universality, The End is the obvious choice as the albums debut single, intense, relevant and catchy it is a definite radio-friendly recording. However, as the album treads along it seems that each song has the potential to make it big as a single in it’s own right, each track has been developed so personally that it has it’s own complete sound, it’s own separate emotion and with no residual hangover from the track before. It’s a definite accomplishment to be able to set each song apart as it’s own, there are not very many artists out there who would be confident in saying that every song on their album is truly distinct and properly developed.

There are many things that Zeptepi are, but there is one thing that they are not: impostors. These boys make genuine rock, they make it well and by the sound of confidence in the instruments, they know it. Universality is an sincere album, the way it opens up your heart, the way it makes you close your eyes for a couple of extra seconds when you blink, the way it makes you tap you foot, all of it is a representation of the authenticity of the feeling and the talent it took to make Universality what it is.
