Mindless Self Indulgence is a band that is known more for their intense coke-fueled live shows and rabid fan-base than their ability to produce aesthetically pleasing music; and this EP does nothing to change that image. “Despierta Los Ninos” was hyped on Mindless Self Indulgence’s website and various internet message boards for months, as per the norm of their homegrown promotional group, B.R.A.T. Only available on their most recent tour, you would actually have to experience their antics up close and personal in order to buy the latest release – though it can be purchased via certain internet merchants.
There are only three words that describe this album: utter self deprecation. The chorus of the first track has vocalist Jimmy Urine proudly proclaiming, “My shit is wack!” And on the last, he admits regretfully that their whole band’s career has been worthless; that “this joke has gone to far…It’s all downhill from here.” Every track in between is just as harsh. Even the insert with the disc containing the happy band pictures has an extra, unused verse for Brooklyn Hype (part one): “No one told me I was sukkin’ the wrong dick, the long dick, the die in obscurity dick…” Urine’s lyrics embody the feel of the album: an utter lack of worth, a complete failure.
Throughout their last full studio release – “Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy” – Urine poked fun at himself with a much lighter attitude than we find here. The only track that retains his old sense of humor is Capitol P – the “P” stands for “Pervert.” But even this feels like a rehash of a few of their older songs; namely Masturbates and Dicks Are For My Friends.
The music itself on the album – in addition to the lyrics – makes the experience that much more painful. Formerly, their music had been innovative; nearly indefinable by its seamless incorporation of genres. Few vocalists dare to sing, rap, falsetto and screech like Urine does on nearly every track. And their style of techno-punk-hip-hop had not existed, until it was forged on “Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy.” Unfortunately, this style stagnates and deteriorates on “Despierta Los Ninos.” Even Marilyn Manson’s rip-off of their unique style on songs like This is the New Shit feels fresher than this production.
Mindless Self Indulgence began as a mediocre band. When they began reveling in it, they accidentally produced the masterpiece known as “Frankenstein Girls Will Seem Strangely Sexy.” But if “Despierta Los Ninos” is an indicator of the future of the band, count me out of their following. Mindless Self Indulgence always manages to be a hit or a miss and this album is clearly a miss.
