Maturity is a great thing, when it applies to music. Music that displays a sense of maturity is often evocative, sweeping, and magnificent. "Sex Nerd", by Gazoonga Attack is not a mature record. In fact, it's as immature and basic as the title might suggest to you. Which is why I was extremely surprised to find out that, rather than coming off as puerile and stupid, "Sex Nerd" is actually a decent record, once you get down to it.
The two main ingredients of Gazoonga Attack's sound are sleaze and sex. Luckily, unlike their contemporaries The Casanovas and The Tremors, Gazoonga Attack frame this sort of music the way it should be framed - in the format of some blistering punk rock. Even better, the subject matter and songwriting make this a level above those other bands; these girls actually manage to make sleazy sound sexy.
Compared to their debut EP "Your Girlfriend Is Shit", "Sex Nerd" is a decidedly more subtle affair. The much improved, but still murky, production has taken some of the jagged edges off of the band, while still leaving them sharp enough to cut you if you're not careful. The result is an album that is still brimming with energy, but which is more disciplined and focused, and releases that energy in a more productive way.
One of the most impressive advancements here is the superior songwriting. Looking For A Trespassing Stranger, for instance, displays a sense of melody mixed up with the grime and energy that was absent from the earlier EP. On the other end of the scale, songs like Random Act of the Devil are far more abrasive and aggressive than the band's previous work, showing that the band has become a lot more versatile with their songwriting since the last time that we saw them.
Unfortunately, not all of the songs are up to standard. Tracks like Disko 69 descend into juvenile strutting, definitely not up to the standard that the band prove that they can reach in the better moments of this album. This lack of consistency, which isn't helped by the fact that the band have multiple vocalists, who constantly shift around on each song, really holds back the album and prevents it from being as compelling as it probably should be.
"Sex Nerd" is a decent debut album, and it shows considerable growth from the band's previous EP. However, while it has some good moments, it doesn't have the consistency or maturity yet to appeal to a wider audience. Perhaps with a bit more time and experience, Gazoonga Attack will be able to come up with something that reaches the potential that this album hints at.
