Drawn From Bees - And The Blind Shall Lead The Way
[Bonefinger, 2009]
Genre/Rock, Genre/Pop, Genre/Indie, Tone/Literate
Most of the press coverage of Brisbane psych-pop band "Drawn From Bees" has been based around comparing them to 60s bands like The Beatles and The Beach Boys. While there is definitely a similarity to their sound, mainly in the area of the vocal harmonies that Drawn From Bees break out often enough, there's also a more than superficial similarities to the music of other Brisbane pop-rock bands like Powderfinger and even the great Go-Betweens.

This is evident on the first track of "And The Blind Shall Lead The Way", where the vocals are uncannily reminiscent of Bernard Fanning before he went into his radio rock phase. The three-part harmonies that come in during the second half of the song set it apart from similar bands though, while lesser bands might try to imitate complex vocal harmonies like this, Drawn From Bees are one of the few bands I've heard who get it just right.

Vocal harmonies aren't the only trick that this band has in their hat though. They also happen to be pretty good at coming up with catchy guitar hooks, as the spaghetti western theme of Waiting For The End proves. The simple melody is backed up by some subtle e-bow work and some unexpected twists and turns that keep the song from getting dull, but also don't sound forced or unnatural. At the other end of the spectrum, the second half of These Philistines is a lengthy instrumental section that shows the maturity and talent of the band's rhythm section, while album closer Lullaby is built around a spare but beautiful piano melody that is complemented by some more gorgeous vocal harmonies.

Drawn From Bees follow in the tradition of a great many Brisbane bands that have come up with a distinctive style of summery pop rock that is accessible yet literate. If they keep making records like "And The Blind Shall Lead The Way", Drawn From Bees might just set themselves out as one of Brisbane's better musical exports.
