Dirty Vegas - One
[EMI, 2004]
Genre/Alternative, Genre/Electronica, Tone/Ambient
Before I listened to this album, I'd never heard of Dirty Vegas before. Apparently they had a hit song when Mitsubishi used one of their tracks as background music for one of their annoying advertisements, but since I watch very little TV, I never saw or heard the film in question. So, I was able to approach "One" with a mind entirely free of preconceptions, but inferring from the band name and cover artwork that I was probably going to be hearing some sort of sleazy, alcohol-fueled barroom rock and roll. If only that was what happened.

Instead of the awful Motley Crue-style rock I was expecting, what I got was a bunch of limp-wristed British guys singing some of the blandest guitar rock that I've ever heard in my life. When I say "bland", I do mean "bland", these guys even manage to make listening to Keane sound like an enjoyable and interesting activity. Each of the ten tracks here is filled to the brim with empty electronic twittering, weak guitar parts, and some of the most insipid, clichéd lyrics that I've ever had the misfortune of hearing.

Take, for instance, the stupidly titled Amillionways. It's not quite sure whether it wants to be dance music or a folk ballad, and as a result sounds like a bizarre fusion of the worst that each genre has to offer. Roses actually contains the line, "The only thing worth living for is love", a line so terrible and sugary that even Bono from U2 would probably blush with embarrassment at it. There's a place for relatively unchallenging pop music, since you can't be listening to cutting-edge stuff all of the time, but this is just beyond unchallenging.

It's really difficult to say anything more on this record, since there's nothing to write about. It's not terrible, and there are no moments on the record so awful that you can stand up and say "this is where it falls apart". It's just a thoroughly uninspiring effort, from start to finish. To add insult to injury, there is some rather annoying copyright protection on this CD, which stopped it playing in my main CD player, so buyer beware. Why anyone would actually want to copy this is beyond me, anyway.
